Our Journey

There had to be a better way.

That's what I thought as I took in my bathroom. Wet fur was everywhere. My pup, codename: His Majesty, had survived yet another bath time and was happily snoozing on the sofa.

Meanwhile, I was left to deal with a bathroom that looked as if I'd just butchered a werewolf twice my size in it.

With the mess that always came with bath time came the other question: was there any way to help my pup's bad fur health improve?

He'd been a Romanian ex-stray, and had arrived to my home completely filthy, underweight, and with thin fur. At the time his favourite spot for bellyrubs was bald too. I knew he'd likely struggled to get his fair share of the food in Romania, not just from living on the streets, but also because of the setup the charity I'd got him from had had where all dogs had to be able to reach into a trough. With His Majesty's twitch in his front legs, to do so would have meant smacking his chin on the trough every time and being shoved out of the way by dogs that were steadier on their paws.

I became a dog behaviourist in my spare time to help my pup due to his fears (his baseline emotion is nervous), and as I slowly helped him conquer his twitch through affection, physical therapy and high-quality food, I also started learning how to professionally groom him.

My grooming tools were immediately upgraded, I learned the different ways to groom depending on fur type and condition, how to pick the right shampoos and I even learned a few tricks of the trade relating to speed.

As his fur became glossier the healthier it became, that little bald spot on his belly slowly started to become less obvious, until one day I realised it was gone, and it wasn't even possible to see a bit of skin in that spot under all that fur.

His Majesty now has one of the shiniest, healthiest coats in town, that's silky smooth to the touch.

I'm still in training as a groomer, and intend to do additional training with Rascals of Woburn. I currently serve my clients from a temporary setup at my home, with a plan to have a dog grooming van to serve my clients in the future.
